What's going on around here:
How long do you give a book before you close it and move on to the next one? I was 41 pages into 2666 by Roberto Bolaño, which yes, I know, is supposed to be THE great modern novel! But I just couldn't. It didn't have me. I didn't like it. Plus it was kinda sexist in a way I'm becoming very tired of. I felt weird about returning it to the library without finishing it, but I'm not interested in spending my reading time slogging through something I don't like, just because I feel like I should.
I made cheese for the first time last weekend! It was ricotta, it was so easy, and I can't wait to do it again. I used a combination of a tutorial from this book, and an Epicurious recipe I can't find now.
Kristie and I are working hardcore on our finances, which is equal parts exhilarating and challenging. I was thinking the other day about the day or weekend trips we would've taken this summer if we weren't being so conscientious – Cape Cod, Hampton Beach, maybe even Philadelphia (which neither of us have ever been to). But I remind myself that a future of traveling without debt/worry/guilt will be so much sweeter. And there are parts of living on a budget that are actually really empowering and freeing. Maybe I'll write a post about it.
Oh gosh. I really hope we make it back to that little river behind Smith. On a hot day, there's nothing like it. Samson loves to swim there too! But I have to wait a few more days – I have a nasty rope burn on my leg courtesy of a dog WHO SHALL GO UNNAMED and his leash. Should probably wait until that's healed to go swimming in rivers.
