It feels like we've been on the road so much this summer already for celebrations and weddings! I was feeling the need for a way to pack my jewelry that could keep it safe and organized, AND so that I could see it all at once. Rolling it all up with this project is the perfect solution. It was awesome to use it this past weekend when we were back in New York City for another wedding :)
I love this project because it includes space for bracelets and rings (my current favorites), necklaces, post earrings, and the little things that don't really fit in those categories. Do you want to make one too? It only takes about an hour!
You will need:
1/4 yard of felt, cut into:
- 1 piece 15"x10"
- 1 piece 3"x10"
- 1 piece 1.5"x10"
- 1 piece 3"x4"
Narrow cotton ribbon, cut into:
- 5 pieces 10" length
- 1 piece 27" length
Also: matching thread, a sewing machine, pins, a hot glue gun
Pin the 3"x10" piece to the bottom of the 15"x10" piece, matching it up with the bottom edge. Stitch around three sides, leaving the "top" of the 3"x10" piece open. This will form one long pocket along the bottom of the organizer.
Stitch two lines vertically through the long pocket, dividing it into three smaller sections.
Pin the 1.5" piece so that it overlaps the open top of these new pockets. Stitch along three sides – the two short sides, and the long top of the 1.5" piece. (Not the bottom!)
This flap will keep trinkets safely in the three small pockets.
Pin the 3"x4" piece of felt about halfway up the 15"x10" piece, lining up the right edges. Sew along just the vertical edges, leaving the top and bottom of the 3"x4" piece open. This is where you will attach post earrings. This will also help keep necklaces in place.
Double hem the edges of the ribbon to keep them from fraying.
Hot glue the ribbons in place: One above the post earring section, and one below (approximately 10" apart) – this is where you can attach the top and bottom of necklaces (threaded behind the post earring section to keep them from getting tangled); three on the left side, equidistant from each other for rings and bracelets.
Attach the longer piece of ribbon to the middle of the back of the jewelry organizer with the same technique.
Fill with your favorite jewelry, and roll it up!
Safe and sound – and not too bad to look at, either.
I can't decide which feature is my favorite – I love how the post earring piece does double duty by holding earrings AND keeping necklaces from getting tangled in transit. And the overlapping pockets at the bottom are perfect for other trinkets that don't fit anywhere else! I like it all, ha.
