Happy Monday! I hope you had a nice, restful weekend. I'm really excited to share a new tutorial with you today – clay napkin rings, four different ways.
Originally I had just planned on doing one, but ideas for little extra touches kept popping up. They all follow the same first steps, so let's get started!
You will need:
- Oven bake clay (I used Sculpey – one napkin ring requires about three of those pre-cut pieces)
- A rolling pin
- A knife
- A little bit of water
- A measuring tape or ruler
Roll out the clay to about 1/4" thickness. Measure and cut out a rectangle that's 2" by 6".
Adding a little bit of water if you need it (to help the clay stick), attach the short ends together (one overlapping about an inch over the other), making the ring.
Bake according to the clay package instructions. I love this simple one – I think it's definitely inspired by my friend Taylor's ceramics! I really like the overlapping, foldedness of her work.
Time for the next one! I think it's cool and a little weird. Kristie said it looks like surgery...
In addition to the supplies above, you'll also need a toothpick, embroidery thread, and an embroidery needle.
Follow the steps above, and after you've made the ring, use the toothpick to poke matching holes on both sides of the seam. Bake according to clay package instructions, and once it has totally cooled, thread your needle and "stitch" across the holes!
This next one is probably my favorite.
This way, the napkin rings can double as one-of-a-kind place cards! I used letter stamps for metal stamping, but I think this would also work with cookie imprinters.
Once you have your clay rolled out, stamp a name. Follow the above instructions for shaping the ring (the fold will be on the back of the finished product). Bake according to clay package directions.
The last one, inspired by these Julie Nolan necklaces I've basically been coveting my whole life...
Zodiac constellations! I'm a Libra, so that's the one I chose to do for this example. All you need is a toothpick!
Look up zodiac constellations on Google, and follow them to make a pattern. Then make the ring as described above (the fold will be in the back of the finished product) and bake according to clay package instructions.
