There are zillions of reasons I love the winter holiday season, and indulging a little extra in sugary treats is definitely one of them. February is almost over, and there is still candy leftover from Christmas (not to mention Valentine's Day) in our house – but my sweet tooth wants a break. I'm calling it: it's time to cut down on added sugar for awhile.
I did this once last year, and wasn't really prepared. I had a headache for two days straight! This time, I've got a plan.
- Be mindful about how I snack at work. Bring fruit, nuts, and more real foods instead of granola bars and cookies.
- Avoid ordering desserts and sugary cocktails when we go out.
- Have seltzer at home with dinner instead of wine or soda.
- Replace my morning coffee with green tea instead. I've started drinking (newly improved) Lipton Pure Green Tea, and I catch myself craving the light, fresh flavor. It's so nice to pause at work for a tea break, too. I feel like not only am I cutting out something that's not very healthy for me, I'm replacing it with a powerful, good thing! The updated green tea joins new black and herbal teas from Lipton – check them out here.
- When all else fails and I need chocolate, go for dark chocolate instead (the antioxidants!).
