I love finding new uses for those packages of wood rounds you can find at craft stores. This DIY might be my favorite, though!
I've had camping on the brain lately (I just scored a great pair of hiking boots from Craigslist for $20), so I wanted to put together a fun checkers game we can bring with us next time we sleep under the stars. I even added a leather drawstring to turn the cloth "board" into a bag to carry the pieces!
To make the rustic checkers set, you will need:
- Black and white checked fabric, cut to eight-and-a-half squares by eight-and-a-half squares (I used this one)
- Sixteen small wood rounds
- Black and white craft paint and a small brush
- 26" of leather cord
- Pins
- A safety pin
- A sewing machine or basic sewing skills
Start by making the casing for the leather cord. Working on the wrong side of the fabric, pin back all four edges with a half-inch inseam.
I found it helpful to snip away three of the corners. I think this way it was easier to thread the leather cord together.
Make sure one corner is left "open." This is where the leather cord will come out.
Attach a safety pin to one end of the leather cord, and carefully thread it through the casing on all four sides.
To make the pieces, paint black circles on eight of the wood rounds, and white on the other eight.
That's it! Cinch it closed with the leather ties when you're done playing.
