I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but -- the Target OneSpot section is my kryptonite.
It's the first place I visit every time I shop there, and my cart quickly becomes littered with little things that I don't need per se, but inexplicably want. The other day, I almost bought a tiny box of gold-painted faux acorns for $3. Not terrible if that's what you're looking for, but there were only like 10 in the box and that kinda bugged me. So I decided to put the faux acorns back, and make my own!
I started by gathering acorns from underneath oak trees by my parking lot at work (side note -- I think a few of my coworkers are pretty sure I'm officially a weirdo). Once home, I rinsed them in a solution of 1 part bleach, 6 parts warm water to clean them and also prevent mold or anything weird from growing. I laid them out on a paper towel to dry.
Once they were completely dry, I painted them using a craft brush and this paint, which was left over from this project, this one, and these too. (Probably even more haha.) Once the gold leaf paint is dry, these tiny guys can be displayed loose on your dinner table or in dishes, bowls, or mason jars.
Every couple of days I come home with more acorns, so I'm adding to this collection as I go. They're a great addition to our autumnal decor, and I'm brainstorming more ways to display and use them. Maybe as a wreath someday? Hmm...
