I love mittens -- but honestly I've never been able to find a pair I like. That's because they never fit me! I have short thumbs -- like Megan Fox. (So yes, I'm basically Megan Fox.) Standard mittens are just too long in the thumb for me. There's extra space of like...an inch.
And I'm embarrassed because why did it take me so long to knit my own pair, to my own weird specifications? Well, I have them now, and they fit...like a glove? (Sorry.) Here's the pattern so you can make your own, too.
You will need:
- Ombre bulky yarn
- Size 10.5 US double-pointed needles
- A stitch marker
- Scrap yarn
- Darning needle
- Faux shearling cut to two 6" ovals (optional)
- Cast on 22 sts evenly between three needles
- Work in a k1, p1 rib for 10 rounds
- K two rounds
- Knit into the front and back of the first stitch, then knit to the end of the row
- K two rounds
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 two more times
- Divide for thumb: K to within 3 stitches of the end of the row. Slip these three, and three more, onto scrap yarn. CO 2 stitches onto the right needle. PM.
- Knit until round 40.
- Round 41: SSK, K to end
- Round 42: K to within 2 stitches of the end of the row. K2tog.
- Round 43: Knit
- Round 44: *K1, K2tog. Repeat from * until end.
- Repeat round 44 two more times. Gather stitches and weave in end.
- Slip the 6 stitches from the scrap yarn to two of the needles (3 stitches on each)
- Pick up 4 stitches on the hand side of the thumb opening. PM.
- K until the length of your thumb (I only needed 10 rounds, ha!)
- Once you've reached the desired length, *K1, K2tog. Repeat from * until end. Gather stitches and weave in end.
- Optional: Hand-stitch the shearling ovals to the palms of your mittens.
