My brother was traveling in Canada last month, and returned home with a new French friend. Ludi and her dog stayed with us for 10 days. Not only was it awesome to make a new friend (we miss her!), it was a great chance for Kristie and I to practice our French and for Ludi to practice her English.
We had a funny moment though when Ludi was trying to tell us a joke, but we didn't realize it...
"What do you call a pile of cats?" she asked with a smile.
"Hmm, there's really no word for that in English," we said.
"No, what do you call a pile of cats?" she asked again.
"Ludi, why would anyone have a reason to talk about a pile of cats? There's no word for that in English! Is there really a French word for it?"
It went back and forth like this for a minute longer, until she showed us the joke she was reading from online. The answer? A "meowntain."
I had already been thinking about what the three of us must have sounded like to her -- our quick and loud reparte over dinner full of inside jokes and gentle ribbing. The video above cracked me up, giving a little insight into what it's like to hear English when you don't speak it.
