When I say "throwaway," I mean that literally. This chair was garbage. Someone had thrown it away and I dragged it off their yard and stuffed it into the trunk of my Yaris.
I was in Connecticut stopping to see my mom after my friend Cara's bridal shower when I spotted it on the curb in the neighborhood where I'd grown up. I drove past it at first (I swear I did!) but had to turn around. (What if it's an Eames chair?! I thought to myself. It's not.) It has good bones. Well, it looks like it has good bones. In reality, it's a little rickety and not very comfortable, but man does it look good in our living room.
I used our electric sander and 80 grain paper to remove as much of that old pale blue paint as I could -- I have become such a fan of that thing. Then I cleaned everything, and spraypainted the legs gold, and the shell cream, using a paint and primer in one.
Also I realized I have this pillow on the chair in every shot! That's not because there's anything wrong underneath the pillow, I just forgot to take it off. My bad.
Here's the before shot again, just so we remember this chair's humble beginnings (and you can see my basement even more close-up)...
PS - A new look for our living room, and how to paint a bicycle.
