I took a breather after redoing our front porch and bedroom, but with the advent of chillier weather and more time spent inside on the couch, it seemed suddenly important to make our living room a little nicer to be in.
We're taking our time, though. I was itching to get it all done quickly (I like fast turnarounds on projects like this), but you can't rush Craigslist. That's how we found this Urban Outfitters sleeper couch! I picked it up on my way home from Camp Grandpa. It's my favorite thing we've updated so far, second only to this limited edition print my friends at Minted sent to spruce things up a little. It's one of 1000 prints of a sepia-toned photograph taken in Glacier National Park by Brooke Chandler of Paper & Parcel. I really like how it mellows some of the more modern elements of the room, and keys in to a grown-up camp theme started by the vintage Hudson Bay four-points blanket (an eBay score I'm still fist-pumping about).
And hanging up this print caused a ripple effect in the room -- we actually gave intentional thought to what's on the walls. No longer was the criteria, "Oh hey, this is in a frame! Let's hang it up!" but actually, you know, how the art worked together and with the room. Man, growing up is cool.
It might be a reach, but can I call this a Mad-Men-meets-Moonrise-Kingdom theme? Maybe not yet. There's still work to be done -- like weaving a rug, finding a blanket chest, repainting an old plastic shell chair. But for the time being, our living room feels nice and put together already.
I wanted to share a few other contenders we were seriously considering to bring our art game to the next level. Check out Minted's art marketplace for more inspiration, limited edition prints, and maybe even that push to make your living room just a little bit nicer to, well, live in!
