I was invited to the Michaels store in Saugus, MA last night to check out some of their store updates and new designs. First let me say the improvements were not lost on the group of bloggers in attendance -- the whole store feels much more open. But it was also a lot of fun to connect with other bloggers in person (some of whom I was already following on Instagram -- isn't it funny when that happens?) and to be if not in Boston, at least very nearby for a couple of hours.
As I was beginning the drive home just after the sun had set, my GPS led me into the city. The skyline sparkled as I swung around toward the Zakim Bridge, and I remembered just how much of my heart still belongs to this city. While my family moved to CT from Boston when I was too little to remember any of my childhood spent there, I moved back for a year after college, and commuted in once a week for two years after that. Honestly, it feels a little weird to claim some level of ownership over a place when I've spent such a relatively small part of my life there, but that city holds a lot of comfort and familiarity for me -- probably because so many people I love still live there. Kristie and I are overdue for a long visit back.
It was with much pleasure and pride that I switched off my GPS in the middle of Boston, having gotten my bearings and knowing I could get myself home from there -- appreciating the fact that I still posess those bearings. I hit the highway and settled in for my drive west, turning up an old episode of "This American Life," and watched the skyline recede in my rearview mirror as the traffic began to thin out. I know the way home by heart.
