I know it's still technically a month away, but Mother's Day tends to come up on the horizon pretty quickly. (I hate how fast spring seems to go when compared to winter, don't you?) It seemed like now would be a good time to work on something special decor-wise, before things get too busy. I like the contrasting thread in this DIY -- it keeps it colorful without making the banner feel childish -- and how easy it is to make it work for Father's Day too, but you'll have to wait until June for that.
Now all I have to do is figure out what to get my mama for a gift...
To make this banner, you will need:
- Two different colors of felt (I used four black legal-paper-sized felt pieces from Joann Fabrics, and three gray)
- Two colors of contrasting embroidery thread
- An embroidery needle or one with a large eye
- Scissors or a rotary cutter
- Pins
- Craft jute
- Basic sewing skills or a sewing machine
- Trace and cut out your flags and letters. I made my flags 7" tall and 5" wide, with a notch in the bottom, and my letters 4" tall and 3" wide.
- Pin the letters to the flags, and sew chunky, slightly uneven stitches using the embroidery thread. I used yellow thread for "YAY" and pink for "MOM." Remove the pins.
- Pin the flags to the jute and sew in place using a zig-zag stitch. Remove the pins and hang!
PS - Scrap fabric bunting, and a potato-stamped heart banner!
