This was one of those DIYs that ended up going a little bit differently than I thought it would. The finished product wasn't too far off the mark, but it was just different enough to make me wish I'd thought it through a minute longer to begin with. AN-yway! I'm happy with how it turned out, and here's what I did!
You will need:
- A standing mirror
- Painter's tape
- One-step gold leaf paint
- Small paintbrush
Tape off the part of the frame you want to paint. I marked it off diagonally for a little bit of a geometric look. Within that area, tape off all the places the mirror meets the frame.
Here's where I went a little off-course. I had planned to use gold craft paint for the frame, but it ended up looking like this after the first coat...
It didn't really inspire confidence, nor did it look quite the way I'd envisioned even after a second coat.
It just so happened I was also using one-step gold leaf paint for another project at the same time, on the same table. I tried a little bit of that on the mirror frame, and was much happier with the result. It's a little more bronze, which matches our bedroom decor better.
The gold leaf paint went on faster, and I only needed one coat. After it had fully dried, I used a knife to scratch off some of the paint that had leaked under the tape, and back up in the bedroom it went!
