Make someone's Valentine's Day special with this homemade heart-stamped banner! You can hang it up at home, fold it and send it in the mail, or hang it on a friend's porch for a sweet surprise. It has hearts on both sides, so it would be great to hang in a doorway. Ask any little kids in your life to help with the stamping for a special touch.
You will need:
- Muslin or another plain fabric (I bought half a yard and had plenty left over)
- Fabric scissors
- Paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Red craft or fabric paint
- Potato
- Sponge brush
- Knife
- Jute twine (I used this kind)
- Sewing machine and basic sewing skills
(See below for photos of the steps!) Draw a double-sided pattern for your flags on the paper and cut out the shape. Mine was 8.5 inches long and 4 inches wide, and I notched each end. Trace that shape onto your fabric and cut out as many pieces as you want. I made five.
Carve a heart-shaped stamp from a potato.
Coat it with red paint, and stamp two hearts per piece of fabric, facing different directions (make sure you put scrap paper underneath the fabric to catch bleeding). Lay flat until the hearts are completely dry.
Cut a section of twine and fold each piece of fabric over the twine so that one heart is on each side. Pin in place. Repeat until all your pieces of fabric are pinned to the twine. Using the zig-zag setting on your sewing machine and keeping the twine in place by guiding it through with your machine's feet, sew the fabric to the twine. You want the zig-zag to go back and forth over the twine. (You can also sew the fabric to the twine by hand.)
Hang (or fold up and mail) and enjoy!
This one is hanging in our living room right now. I think I'd like to keep it up even longer than Valentine's Day...
PS - Scrap fabric bunting, and hand-stamped wrapping paper.
