We all know food is one of the best things about the holidays -- time-honored traditions cement themselves around hours spent in a warm kitchen, family recipes are passed down and cherished, and many a feast is loudly celebrated. This time of year gets me thinking about my grandma, who we lost in 2009. I remember the Christmas Eve dinner she'd make with my mom, her favorite egg nog recipe, and the amazing Christmas ham she cooked every year. But what I remember most fondly are her aprons. She'd always wear a pretty half-apron when cooking or baking; in fact, in many of my memories, she's wearing one. It was her chosen uniform, and always a symbol of her culinary talents -- how much she loved cooking, and feeding her family, and us. I miss her.
I have a few vintage half-aprons hanging in my closet -- I can't seem to resist when I see one for sale. I know they have a similar meaning for a lot of the women in my family. I can't speak for them personally, but every time I tie one around my waist, I think of my grandma. I hope my memories of her help me become a good cook, a better hostess, and someday, a really wonderful grandmother.
I was perusing Etsy for half-aprons, and found myself drawn to the linen ones above. I love how they feel both classic and modern at the same time, and I think they'd be perfect for holiday cooking and baking this year.
