I thought it might be fun to have a little succulent garden on the front porch once we've finished redoing it. They're really cool to look at and, more importantly, easy to keep alive. Kristie and I were in Christmas Tree Shops the other day when I spotted a bright pink basket (that matched our plans for bright colors so well) and said how I wished we could put the succulents in that! "Why not?" Kristie said, ever my optimist. We found coco moss liners in the store, and bought succulents at Ikea and our local flea market this past weekend. I love our ability to work together, which, while it does not make an appearance every day, has resulted in some pretty neat stuff. My ideas and her knowledge of how to make, well, anything tend to agree well!
This was a great project. It cost us just over $10 and took about fifteen minutes to put together, and I think it looks awesome.
To make a succulent garden in a basket, you will need:
- A basket (we found our plastic one at Christmas Tree Shops)
- Coco moss liner
- Succulents
- Scissors
- Dirt
Cut the coco moss liner into a circle that will fit your basket. Make sure you have a gap of about an inch between the liner and the lip of the basket; this way the moss won't peek out once the plants have been added. Line the basket with the coco moss.
Take your succulents out of the packaging in which they came and arrange them in the basket on top of the coco grass.
Add soil a little bit at a time around the plants until they're stabilized, then add it at the edges of the basket until the coco moss is no longer visible, and the soil is even around the bases of the plants. (We got a ton of soil stuck in the grooves at the top of the basket during this process; nothing a toothpick couldn't fix!)
I can't wait for the front porch to be finished! I know this little basket will be the star.
*Keep in mind, if you over-water the succulents, the water will drain out through the bottom of the basket. We're keeping ours on the front porch, on a wooden table that's been sealed for easy cleaning.
